MBI Announces Agreement with Lightower Fiber Networks
to Advance MassBroadband 123 Network

WESTBOROUGH - January 4, 2012 - In keeping with the Patrick-Murray Administration’s commitment to expanding broadband access in western Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) today announced an important agreement with Lightower Fiber Networks to provide long-term access to fiber-optic cable that will connect the MassBroadband 123 network to the major Internet connection point in Boston. MBI Receives Fiber-Optic Cable for MassBroadband 123

The MBI recently received over 170,000 feet of fiber-optic cable for the MassBroadband 123 network, which will extend high-speed Internet access to more than 120,000 communities in western and north central Massachusetts. G4S Technology LLC is managing the final design and construction of the network, which requires fiber-optic cable to be attached to 33,000 existing utility poles in the project's service area.

Bridging the digital divide in WMass

In Northampton Wednesday night, some 50 people attended the Massachusetts Broadband Institute community meeting to provide an update on the "MassBroadband 1-2-3" fiber-optic network.

Governor Patrick, MBI Director Judith Dumont, Representative William Smitty Pignatelli and other public officials celebrated the start of construction for the MassBroadband 123 network on Tuesday at the Sandisfield Fire Department.

 


SANDISFIELD – Tuesday, July 26, 2011 – Governor Deval Patrick today joined public officials and firefighters at the Sandisfield Fire Department to kick-off construction of the MassBroadband 123 fiber-optic network project to expand broadband access to more than 120 communities in western and north central Massachusetts. MBI Hosts Design Session for Veterans' Web Portal

Working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Veterans' Services and the Home Base Program, the MBI is continuing to make progress toward the development of a comprehensive web portal for veterans and their family members. The MBI hosted a design session to plan the components of the web portal that will connect veterans to the resources they need and make the online experience of accessing veterans' services more streamlined. Massachusetts Broadband Institute Announces Agreement with Springfield to Advance the MassBroadband 123 Network

Springfield, MA (March 21, 2011) – In keeping with the Patrick-Murray Administration’s commitment to expanding broadband access in western Massachusetts, the MBI today announced an important agreement with the City of Springfield to advance the MassBroadband 123 network and provide broadband infrastructure connections for more than 150 schools, libraries, hospitals and public safety entities in Springfield. In addition, the MBI will utilize the city’s existing infrastructure to connect the MassBroadband 123 fiber-optic network to the major Internet connection point in Springfield.

MBI Receives Important Federal Approval to Advance the MassBroadband 123 Network

Westborough, MA (March 14, 2011) – The MBI today announced it has received the necessary federal approval to advance the MassBroadband 123 network project. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has formally approved the MBI’s environmental assessment, a critical requirement to commencing the 1,338 mile Internet backbone network build that will expand broadband access in western and north central Massachusetts communities.
