Interstate 91 Project

The MBI, in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation I-91 Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project, completed a $4.5 million, 55 mile fiber network along Interstate 91 from the Connecticut to Vermont borders. This project is a critical component of MassBroadband 123.

In March 2010, the MBI signed an agreement with the city of Springfield, which permits
MBI to utilize the city’s existing infrastructure and connect the I-91 portion of the MassBroadband 123 network to the major Internet access point in Springfield.

This important connection point is necessary to link the network to the Internet and expand broadband services to communities in western and north central Massachusetts.

Under the agreement, the MBI will provide broadband infrastructure connections for more than 150 schools, libraries, hospitals and public safety entities in Springfield.
