Broadband Availability Overview

About Broadband Mapping

The MBI is participating in a federal program funded by the State Broadband Initiative (SBI) at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. This multi-year program involves collaborating with existing broadband service providers throughout the Commonwealth to collect, verify and map broadband availability information on a semi-annual basis.  The MBI also has broadband planning, adoption and computer usage program funding through the SBI.

Broadband availability, technology and speed data acquired from the existing broadband service providers are incorporated into the MBI’s Massachusetts Broadband Map and the Federal Communications Commission’s National Broadband Map, as part of a national effort to connect the country to affordable, high-speed broadband.

The maps should be used as estimates only. Data for the maps was provided at the U.S. Census block level, which means that if any part of the Census block has availability then the entire block is considered to have availability.

Information on the maps will continue to be verified by other sources and will be updated every six months to improve the accuracy of the maps and to capture changes in service availability.

Tell Us About Broadband in Your Area

We encourage the public and representatives from community anchor institutions to participate in the ongoing mapping and verification process by taking our survey and speed test. If you have already completed a survey, we appreciate your feedback and consider the data to be a critical part of the MBI’s efforts to verify and refine broadband availability.
